5.1.3 Output Variables

This section explains the outputs available in the Common module. They are categorized as follows:

Note: In order to display the contours and X-Y plots, or to write the outputs into an ascii file, the outputs on each Geometric entity (such as Boundary, Volume, Interface or Points) need to be activated in the Model Tab of the Properties Panel.

Property Variables

Property Variables are the physical properties for the fluid(s) and solid(s) in the domain. They are required as an integrated part of the solution. They can be displayed in the GUI Viewing Window for selected Geometric Entities as well as written to the ascii file Filename_points.txt (when activated). They can also be viewed as X-Y Plots for Point Probes.

A table of the Property Variables for the Common module is shown below:

Common Module Physical Properties
Label in GUI Variables List Label in GUI X-Y Plot Menu Label in points.txt Definition Units Display/ Output Options
Density Density rho_ Density of the fluid kg/m3 At a Point and In the GUI Display Window
Porosity Porosity por_ porosity - At a Point and In the GUI Display Window

Table 5.1 - Common module property variables

The Property Variables in the Common module may be displayed in the GUI Viewing Window for selected Geometric Entities such as Boundaries, Derived Surfaces, Interfaces, Streamline, Particles and/or Volumes. For selected surfaces and volumes, Property Variables are automatically activated for display/output. For Point Probes, however, Property Variables must be activated explicitly for output, as shown in Figure 5.3.

Derived Variables

Derived Variables are engineering data computed from the Primary Variables. While not required as a part of the solution, they provide valuable information for analysis of the results. They may be displayed in the GUI Viewing Window for selected Geometric Entities as well as written to the ascii file Filename_points.txt (when activated). They can also be viewed as X-Y Plots for Point Probes.

A table of the Derived Variables for the Common module is shown below:

Common Module Derived Variables
Label in GUI Derived Variables List Label in GUI X-Y Plot Menu Label in point.txt Definition Units Display/Output Options
Cell Volume Cell Volume cells_vol_ Volume of the Cell m3 At a Point and In the GUI Display Window
Shadowgraph Shadowgraph NA Laplacian of the Density Field kg/m5 At a Point and in the GUI Display Window

Table 5.2 - Common module derived variables

The Derived Variables in the Common module may be displayed in the GUI Viewing Window for selected Geometric Entities such as Boundaries, Derived Surfaces, Interfaces and/or Volumes. For selected surfaces and volumes, Derived Variables are automatically activated for display/output. For Point Probes, however, Derived Variables must be activated explicitly for output, as shown in Figure 5.4

Integrated Quantities

Integrated Output are quantities that are integrated over a Boundary, Interface or Volume. When available and activated, they are stored in the ascii file Filename_integrals.txt. They may also be displayed in the GUI using X-Y Plots.

To access the variables listed below using expressions, the syntax given under Expressions column in Table 5.3 is used with a suffix “@boundary or volume name” such as avgdensity_pipe = share.rho_avg@pipe.

A table of the Integrated Quantities for the Common module is shown below:

Common Module Integrated Quantities
Label in GUI Properties Label in GUI Plot Menu Label in integral.txt Units Definition Relevant Geometric Entity Expressions
Density Density rho_avg_ kg/m3 The average density Volumes share.rho_avg
Mass

Mass

mass_v_ kg The total mass Volumes share.mass_v
Volume (Common module) Volume vol_tot_ m3 The total volume Volumes share.vol_tot
Area (Common module) Area area_tot_ m2 Boundary Area Boundaries & Interfaces share.area_tot
Normal Normal in X direction norm_x _ - Normal to Boundary Boundaries & Interfaces share.norm_x

Table 5.3 - Common module integrated quantities

Integrated Output for a selected Geometric entity under the Common module must be explicitly activated as shown in Figure 5.5.
